Pakistan is one of the most climate-vulnerable nations on Earth, yet it contributes less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This stark inequality was laid bare in 2022, when catastrophic floods inundated one-third of the country, displaced 33 million people, and caused over $30 billion in damage. The 2022 floods were not a one-off event — they were a preview of the future that climate change is imposing on Pakistan.
In 2026, the effects of climate change are no longer abstract projections. They are measurable, observable realities that are reshaping Pakistan's agricultural landscape, straining its water resources, and threatening its food security. Understanding these impacts is essential for policymakers, farmers, businesses, and citizens alike.
Agriculture accounts for approximately 24% of Pakistan's GDP and employs over 40% of its workforce. It is also the sector most directly exposed to climate change.
Rising temperatures. Pakistan's average temperature has increased by approximately 0.6°C over the past five decades — roughly double the global average rate. In 2026, summer temperatures in Sindh and Balochistan have repeatedly exceeded 50°C, setting new records. These extreme temperatures reduce wheat yields by up to 10% per degree Celsius of warming, according to research from the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC).
Shifting monsoon patterns. The monsoon, which provides 60-70% of Pakistan's annual rainfall, is becoming increasingly erratic. Some areas receive excessive rainfall leading to flooding, while others experience prolonged dry spells. Groundwater depletion. As surface water becomes less reliable, farmers increasingly turn to groundwater pumping. Pakistan's water table is dropping by 1-3 meters per year in many agricultural areas, particularly in Punjab. At current extraction rates, some areas could exhaust their groundwater within 20-30 years.
Saltwater intrusion. Rising sea levels are pushing saltwater into coastal aquifers in Sindh and Balochistan, contaminating drinking water and reducing the land available for agriculture in the Indus River Delta — one of the world's largest river deltas.
The combination of reduced agricultural yields, water scarcity, and extreme weather events poses a serious threat to Pakistan's food security. The country already imports significant quantities of wheat, edible oil, and pulses. Climate change could increase these import requirements while simultaneously reducing export earnings from agriculture.
Smallholder farmers — who produce over 60% of Pakistan's food — are the most vulnerable. They typically lack access to climate-resilient seeds, irrigation infrastructure, crop insurance, and extension services. Without targeted support, many face the prospect of reduced harvests, increased debt, and potential displacement.

Water conservation — fixing leaks, using efficient irrigation, and reducing wasteful consumption — makes a direct difference. Supporting local farmers who use sustainable practices strengthens the supply chain. Planting trees, even in urban settings, provides cooling, reduces air pollution, and sequesters carbon.
Climate change is the defining challenge of our generation. For Pakistan, the stakes could not be higher. The country's agricultural heritage, water resources, and food security are all at risk. But with informed action, strategic investment, and collective will, Pakistan can build the resilience it needs to weather the storm.
