Researchers at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) have developed a breakthrough water purification technology that uses solar energy to provide clean drinking water to remote communities. The system, which costs a fraction of conventional purification plants, can process up to 1,000 litres of water per day.
Technology Overview
The purification system combines advanced membrane filtration with solar-powered UV disinfection to remove bacteria, viruses and chemical contaminants from any water source. Unlike conventional systems, it requires no electricity grid connection and minimal maintenance, making it ideal for rural and disaster-affected areas.
The innovation addresses a critical challenge in Pakistan, where an estimated 22 million people lack access to safe drinking water. Waterborne diseases remain a leading cause of illness and death, particularly among children in rural areas.
Deployment Plans
The research team is working with international development organisations to pilot the technology in several provinces. Initial trials in Sindh and Balochistan have shown promising results, with the systems reliably producing water that meets World Health Organisation quality standards.
The team hopes to scale production to serve thousands of communities within the next two years.
