Biography
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born 19 April 1957) is an Indian billionaire businessman and the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, India's most valuable company by market capitalization. With a net worth exceeding $100 billion, he is consistently ranked among the world's richest people and is the richest person in Asia. Reliance Industries, founded by his father Dhirubhai Ambani in 1966, has grown into a massive conglomerate with interests in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas, telecommunications (Jio), and retail.
Born in Aden, Yemen, and raised in Mumbai, Mukesh studied chemical engineering at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai and later attended Stanford University's MBA program (though he dropped out to help his father build Reliance). He joined Reliance in 1981 and quickly proved himself, leading the company's entry into polyester textiles and later petrochemicals.
Under Mukesh's leadership, Reliance built the world's largest refinery complex at Jamnagar, Gujarat, with a capacity of 1.2 million barrels per day. He spearheaded Reliance's backward integration strategy, making the company self-sufficient in raw materials. The Reliance Jamnagar complex is often called the "oil city" and is the world's largest grassroots refinery.
In 2016, Ambani launched Reliance Jio, a telecommunications revolution that brought affordable 4G data to over 450 million Indians, fundamentally transforming India's digital landscape. Jio disrupted the entire telecom industry, drove down data prices to among the lowest in the world, and accelerated India's digital transformation. Jio has since launched 5G services and is building a massive AI and cloud infrastructure.
Ambani has also built Reliance Retail into one of the world's largest retail chains, with over 18,000 stores across India. His daughter Isha and twin children Akash and Isha now lead major portions of the business. His son Akash leads Jio, while Isha leads Reliance Retail. The Ambani family's annual events, particularly the weddings, are among the most lavish social occasions in Asia, attracting global celebrities and business leaders.
